Alvarinho

Alvarinho is the signature white grape of Monção and Melgaço, in the far north of the Vinho Verde region along the Minho river. Across the border in Galicia, Spain, the same grape is called Albariño. Its thick-skinned berries give white wines with fresh acidity, and Alvarinho is bottled on its own, blended with Loureiro or Trajadura, and also grown in other Portuguese regions.
