Castelão

Castelão is a red grape of southern Portugal, grown especially on the Setúbal Peninsula around Palmela, where it thrives in sandy soils, and also in the Tejo and Lisbon regions. It gives wines with red fruit and a medium body, and older examples can develop savoury notes. It is bottled on its own and blended with other Portuguese grapes.
