Plains. Cork oaks. Clay.
Drive south from Lisbon and the landscape opens up.
Rolling golden plains, scattered cork oaks, olive groves, whitewashed villages and long, hot summers.
This is the Alentejo, one of Portugal's largest and most popular wine regions.
Its wines are generous, warm and easy to love, just like the region itself.
Where Is the Alentejo?
The Alentejo covers a large part of southern Portugal, between the Tagus River and the Algarve.
Its name means beyond the Tagus.
It is a region of wide horizons, low population and a slow, relaxed pace of life.
Sun and Heat
The Alentejo is hot and dry in summer, with lots of sunshine.
That heat helps grapes ripen fully, producing wines with ripe fruit, soft textures and generous body.
Many producers work hard to keep freshness, choosing cooler sites at higher altitude, picking at the right moment and growing grapes that cope well with heat.
The Red Grapes
Alentejo reds are often blends of several grapes.
Aragênes, known as Tinta Roriz in the north and Tempranillo in Spain, gives red fruit and structure.
Trincadeira adds spice, herbs and freshness.
Alicante Bouschet is a grape with red flesh as well as red skin, giving very deep colour, concentration and firm tannins. It has become one of the Alentejo's signature grapes.
Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Castelão are also widely grown.
The White Grapes
Antão Vaz is the Alentejo's leading white grape, giving ripe tropical and stone fruit with a round texture.
Arinto adds bright acidity and citrus freshness.
Roupeiro, also called Síria, brings floral and fruity aromas.
Blends of these grapes make fresh, flavourful Alentejo whites that are perfect in warm weather.
Talha: Wine Made in Clay
One of the Alentejo's most fascinating traditions is wine made in talhas, large clay amphorae.
This way of making wine has been practised in the region since Roman times.
Grapes are fermented in the clay vessels, often with their skins, and the wine is left to settle naturally.
Vinho de Talha is now recognised as part of the Alentejo designation, and a growing number of producers are reviving the tradition.
Talha wines often have a distinctive earthy, textured character.
Cork Country
The Alentejo is also famous for its cork oak forests.
Portugal is the world's leading cork producer, and much of it comes from this region.
The bark is carefully harvested by hand every nine years or so, without cutting down the tree.
So when you pull the cork from an Alentejo wine, there is a good chance it came from the same landscape.
What Do Alentejo Wines Taste Like?
Reds are typically ripe and smooth, with flavours of blackberry, plum, cherry, spice and sometimes chocolate or herbs.
They are often approachable young, while top reserva and grande reserva wines can age well.
Whites are usually round and fruity, with tropical fruit, peach and citrus.
How to Serve Alentejo Wine
Serve reds at around 16 to 18°C, slightly below room temperature, especially in warm weather.
Serve whites and rosés chilled, around 8 to 12°C.
Bigger, older reds may benefit from decanting.
Alentejo Wine and Food
Alentejo cuisine is rich, rustic and full of flavour, and the wines were made to match it.
Try reds with black pork, migas, lamb stews, grilled meats and cured ham.
Whites are lovely with grilled fish, açorda, salads and soft sheep's cheese.
And good bread and olive oil on the table never hurts.
Choosing Your Alentejo Wine
For a smooth, crowd-pleasing red, choose a classic Alentejo blend.
For power and colour, try an Alicante Bouschet.
For a fresh white, look for Antão Vaz and Arinto.
For something ancient and different, try a Vinho de Talha.
The Taste of the South
The Alentejo is a region of sunshine, space and tradition.
Its wines carry that warmth with them, wherever they are opened.
Pour a glass, slow down and enjoy a little piece of southern Portugal.
