Alvarinho: Freshness from the North

Alvarinho guide: Vinho Verde white grape, flavours, styles and food pairings

Citrus. Stone fruit. Sea air.

In the green, rainy north-west of Portugal, close to the Atlantic and the Spanish border, grows one of Europe's most exciting white grapes.

Alvarinho makes wines that are fresh, aromatic and full of life.

It is the white wine many people fall in love with on holiday in Portugal.

And it is just as good at home.

Where Does Alvarinho Come From?

Alvarinho is grown in the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal.

Its most famous home is the Monção e Melgaço sub-region, along the Minho River, which forms the border with Spain.

Across the river, in Galicia, the same grape is called Albariño and is the star of the Rías Baixas region.

Same grape, two countries, two names.

Green Wine Does Not Mean Green

Vinho Verde literally means green wine.

But the name refers to the green, lush landscape and the idea of young, fresh wine, not the colour of the wine.

Vinho Verde can be white, rosé, red or sparkling.

Many white Vinho Verdes are blends of several grapes, such as Loureiro and Trajadura, while Alvarinho is often bottled on its own as a varietal wine.

What Does Alvarinho Taste Like?

Alvarinho is aromatic and lively.

Expect citrus such as lemon, lime and grapefruit, along with stone fruits like peach and apricot.

Some wines show tropical notes, floral aromas or a salty, mineral freshness that suits the Atlantic setting perfectly.

Its natural acidity keeps every sip bright and refreshing.

Many examples have more body and depth than people expect from a fresh white wine.

Why the Place Matters

The north of Portugal is cooler and wetter than the south, with Atlantic influence and granite soils.

In Monção e Melgaço, surrounding hills give a little shelter from the ocean, helping the grape ripen fully while keeping its freshness.

That balance between ripeness and acidity is what gives the best Alvarinho its character.

Not Just for Drinking Young

Most Alvarinho is enjoyed young and fresh.

But the grape has the structure and acidity to age well too.

Some producers make more serious styles with longer contact on the lees, oak ageing or skin contact, giving more texture and complexity.

Older Alvarinho can develop honeyed and nutty notes while staying fresh.

Sparkling and Sweet Alvarinho

Alvarinho is also used to make excellent sparkling wines, from traditional method Brut to natural sparkling styles.

These keep the grape's fresh citrus character with fine bubbles.

In some years, late harvest sweet Alvarinho is also produced, rich but still balanced by acidity.

How to Serve Alvarinho

Serve Alvarinho well chilled, around 8 to 10°C.

Richer, oak-aged styles can be served a little warmer, around 10 to 12°C, to let the aromas open up.

A standard white wine glass is perfect.

Alvarinho and Food

Alvarinho and seafood is one of the great pairings in wine.

Try it with grilled sardines, clams, prawns, octopus, oysters and grilled white fish.

It is excellent with Portuguese bacalhau dishes.

It also works with sushi, salads, goat's cheese and lighter chicken dishes.

Its freshness makes it a wonderful aperitif too.

Alvarinho or Albariño?

Both sides of the river produce excellent wine from the same grape.

Portuguese Alvarinho from Monção e Melgaço and Spanish Albariño from Rías Baixas can be similar, but each reflects its own soils, climate and winemaking.

Tasting one next to the other is a fun way to explore the differences.

Choosing Your Alvarinho

For pure freshness, choose a young, unoaked Alvarinho.

For more depth and texture, look at reserva, single-plot or skin-contact styles.

For celebrations, try an Alvarinho sparkling wine.

For dessert, look for a late harvest Alvarinho.
